Buying a "recycled" PC is a great way to get decent performance at a great
price. I just hauled two of the three Compaq DeskPro's that I bought
recently down to PJ2T, where we had to press one into service sooner than
expected. Not a single problem to be found during the contest. I've also
set up one for my wife to use with her embroidery sewing machine (actually,
she did most of the setup work), and I put one together for AE9B to use at
his house as well. So the idea seems pretty sound to me.
First order of business is to make sure you're installing Window 98 SE
(Second Edition) -- it's a fairly significant update to Windows 98 and most
machines seem to get along with it better than the original issue of Win98.
The biggest hurdle in getting one of these machines running is downloading
the appropriate drivers from the manufacturer - this often turns into a bit
of a scavenger hunt, because you have to know what devices are in the box
and where to find the correct drivers for them. Fortunately, Compaq (or HP
or whatever they're calling it today) has a good support web site where you
can search for the drivers fairly easily. If there are non-Compaq devices
in the box (Video, network, etc.) you may have to find the drivers from the
device manufacturer rather than Compaq.
The other very important thing to do once you get the basic operating
system installed and before you start installing other apps is to get
connected to the internet and go to the "Windows Update" web site (from
Internet Explorer, pick the "Tools" menu, then "Windows Update") - this
will download and install all the necessary patches and updates for the
machine, and will probably involve several reboots (some updates have to be
applied separately from the rest, with a reboot after installation) -- each
time you reboot, go back to Windows Update and keep grabbing the suggested
updates until you've got them all.
Once you've got these steps done, you should be able to install all the
programs that you want without much problem.
