I very much appreciate the information from K4SB and W5PR below. I writing
the details of my findings in case they can save anyone else some time.

I just figured out the configuration for XP's "Dualview" and I am very
pleased. My Dell 8300 came with an NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 video adaptor
with 128M RAM. It has a DVI (digital) output and an analog (15-pin) one. I
have the PC's DVI port connected to the new monitor's DVI port. The PC's
analog port goes to the old analog monitor. My video adaptor has a driver
for optimizing a two-monitor configuration, but I had to restart the PC for
XP to start Dualview. Dualview is the XP-native capability to have the
second monitor treated as an extension of the primary.

I can now have GeoClock, for instance, on the secondary monitor, and
Writelog on the primary one. I just pulled the GeoClock window (not
maximized) over to the second monitor. All icons and the tool bar stayed on
the primary one.

BTW, my new monitor, a Dell 1800FP (flat panel) also has both a DVI port and
an analog one. Not wanting to waste the analog one, I connected it to a KVM
(keyboard/monitor/mouse) switch. I press a button on the monitor to switch
from DVI input to analog/KVM. The KVM is connected to the docking station
of the notebook PC that I bring home from work and my AR-Cluster node PC,
neither of which needs a full-time monitor. (Being a frugal accountant, I
bought the monitor from Dell's outlet site,
http://www1.us.dell.com/content/default.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dfh, for $408,
though their inventory varies a lot.)

And to set the configurations correctly just go to display in control
panel, and move the #2 monitor either to the left or right of the
main.

Also, you may on occasion find that the second monitor has "swiped"
some of your desktop
icons. Just move them back to where you want them.
