One problem solved. Watching the messages on GoldWave I discovered that the 
transmitter was cutting off on voice peaks. Turning the IC-765's internal 
monitor off didn't fix the problem, but turning the volume to the rig down 
(using 
the WL volume controls) did clear the problem. I then had to turn the mic gain 
on the radio up a bit; works fine now.
