Hi Richard:
Thanks very much for your very comprehensive answer.
I already bought a MicroHam USB driver and will install it shortly.
I'm still using a desk top for the main shack, but for contest operation I'm
using several laptops, and the majority are quite old.
I Will replace some of those laptops by new ones, and some doesn't have
parallel port, so I must send CW via the virtual ports.
I'm forwarding this message to the reflector in case some other friend is
facing the same doubt.
Thanks again
Oms

1. For controlling your radio, you can use any USB-to-serial adapter
instead of a true serial port. This should work with any software.

2. Some laptops have a parallel port but no serial ports. You can usually
key CW and PTT from LPT1 on these laptops. Watch out for non-standard port
addresses, though - using N1MM Logger with IBM laptops, I had to
reconfigure the LPT1 port address used by N1MM from 0378H to 03BCH.

3. I can't say for sure about WriteLog or DX4WIN, but if your software
supports CW keying from DTR on a serial port you may be able to use a
USB-to-serial adapter for CW the same as if it was a true serial port.
Depending on your software, you may even be able to use the same adapter
for both radio control and CW(DTR). This has worked well for me in N1MM
Logger.

4. If your software supports the K1EL WinKey
(http://k1el.tripod.com/wkinfo.html), you can control a WinKey through a
USB-to-serial adapter.

5. microHAM (http://www.microham.com) sells two USB devices that may
interest you - the CW Keyer for radio control + CW, and the microKeyer,
which has additional features for SSB, RTTY and other digital modes as
well. Both of these devices are compatible with WriteLog and DX4WIN.

73,
Rich VE3IAY
