One of the best ways to disable all that stuff running in the
background is to run the msconfig.exe program. I use this so often I
created an icon for it on my desktop. Go to the "startup" tab and
disable them all, then restart your computer. On my computer, there
are no programs there that are essential.
If you're feeling really brave, also go to the "services" tab and
disable them too, but you probably should not disable anything related
to security such as anti-virus or firewall.
And lastly, if you have an "always-on" internet connection such as DSL
or satellite, you can disable that too. This may not be really
necessary with everything else disabled, but you could if you wanted.
