I built mine on a Radio Shack prototype board and it worked out well.
There aren't a lot of parts so I didn't have to add many wires (I used the
IC Protoboard with power and gnd buss lines and 3-hole busses on each IC
pin).
Also, I had problems reading status back from the Yaesu rig. I could
command it to do thing but as far as frequency readings, all I got back was
garbage. To fix this, you will need to add a 1.5k resistor between SO of
the YAESU CAT connector input and GND. ( I think this line is the input to
the buffer going to the MAX232).
You can get the MAX232 part from Digi-Key (1-800-DIGIKEY) or you might be
able to get them at a local electronics store (not Radio Shack). I got one
locally for around $3.
If you get a chance, try some CAT software I wrote. It's written for the
FT-900 but a lot of the functions work on other Yaesu rigs. You can
