Hi Folks,
I know that with some repeaters, keyup times are a little slow, and with any
coded squelch scheme, whether DCS or DTMF coded squelch, etc., the receiving
rig can miss the first tone or two if the transmitting rig doesn't delay
enough after pushing the PTT and before sending the tone sequence. In order
to overcome this, in many rigs the delay is configurable - check the manual
of those trying to send you the tones and encourage them to use a longer
delay. One way to test this is to see if it works between any two given rigs
on simplex but NOT via the repeater.
Also, if you are using a battery saving scheme on the receiving radio, the
rig's receiver may happen to be off during reception of part of the tones,
thus rendering the decoding faulty. Some manufacturers warn you to turn off
the battery saver when using any coded squelch scheme.
With both of the above problems, a sort of work-around can be had by having
the sending rig push his PTT twice in quick sequence - first time to open
the repeater (or cancel the battery saver on the rxing rig) and second time
to actually send the code while the rx path is open. Annoying to other
listeners, though...
