1K across three AA cells in the normal battery clip will cause the cell
voltage to drop, contacts are marginal (springs held? to rivets with
plastic) so the level may change. ALC is usually expected to be a
feedback rather than a level control line. I suspect using a 10k or 50K
pot will produce better stability so long as you can control the battery
clip connections.
