On the FT-101E I have, the VFO pilot light is a red LED that indicates that 
the internal VFO is in use. If the VFO setting is set to external VFO for 
transmit the LED will go off during xmit. Assuming you've checked the VFO 
switch; in "RX EXT" the LED will go out during receive as well and come on for 
transmit.
