I forgot to mention my solution to the ground potential problem. When I had
lost two COM chips in my Commodore 64 I built a simple opto coupler circuit
to separate the computer ground from the radio ground. After that I never
had any problems of that kind.
Such isolators are available from several sources, if you don't prefer to
make your own. One source that comes to mind is www.4ham.de (in the German
language). They offer different kits for Yaesu, Icom and Kenwood. Go to
their Shop and then click on Digital Koppler.
