Paul, I've heard the same thing. I think your best bet is finding one with a dead RF section that you can cannibalize. That's one reason that amid all my Icom/Kenwood/Yaesu gear I've got an old (now) Ten Tec Omni VI+. In my experience, they keep parts available for a far longer time that the Japanese manufacturers.
