Hi Robert,

 When the Main dial usually gets tight and hard to turn it is the shaft 
seizing in the bushing of the encoder. Sometimes you can spray it with some 
silicone to loosen it up but it may need replacing. The encoder may not be 
available but check with Yaesu.
