Dear Ed,

I have used the FT-857 for 2+ years now as my base station. The way you
describe the meter reading is exactly the way mine has worked. I purchased the
LDG FT-Meter and on this analog scale it will read around 40-45 most of the
time when on SSB. On CW it reads 100 watts. I believe that both of these
scales are reading average and not peak power. When you whistle into the mike
the LDG scale will read 100. So I believe that this is normal.

  Enjoy the radio.

Dear Ed,

One item that comes to mind is audio drive. That starts at the microphone.
If the microphone element is worn or defective it might not be producing
the voltage your radio needs to power the speech circuits.

Another item is the microphone's impedance. What impedance does
your radio's manual specify as optimum? Then, again, what impedance is
your microphone?

I wanted to use the Shore 562b noise-cancelling dispatch mike, but the
impedance was 150 ohms and I needed to put a small far in the mike base.

Does your mike take a battery cell to energize it?

Not knowing any of these issues I recommend them to you.

Have not wired my keyer yet so cannot tx on cw at the moment. It was
transmitting full scale though on FM. So I guess there is no problem.

My only concern is when I talk normally over the mic(SSB) the rig's power
meter cannot reach its full scale (100w mark) unless you shout or whistle.

Unlike my FT847. On phone the meter dances up to the end of the scale with
ease.

I wonder if it is the same for all FT857Ds.

FB Brit, I will try your menu setting tomorrow morning and let you know my
findings.

Thanks guys for the immediate replies.
