Hi Roger,
Ah, the trials and tribulations of being a ham.
1st. I did have a grounding problem, but it wasn't the problem withe the
rigs communicating. As suggested by another (and I can't find the
e-mail) that he'd had a similar problem with the sam rig and amp after a
long term of service. At his suggestion, I did a complete reset on the
5000MP. When /I fired up the VL-1000 (Quadra) it was on 40 meters where
it should be.
Unfortunately that grounding problem wiped out the filters at the 12 VDC
input on my VNA. It smoked them! I hope it's repairable as those things
aren't cheap. I foresee a phone call to Array Solutions tomorrow.
But on another note...The Quadra was putting out 500 watts on low, just
like it should, BUT when I went to high to set the ALC it gave me a
warning around 600 - 650 watts of a PA imbalance. Error #1003 which was
not a good sign. That's an imbalance of 50 watts or greater between
sections. It could be a transistor(s) or a combiner "module"?
So I'm looking for any "gotchas" when replacing the MRF-150s such as
balancing or the need for a matched set, a good place to get them, and
wondering if there might be a more rugged replacement for the MRF-150
that wouldn't require rebuilding the RF section. A service manual would
help too<:-))

Band Data 2 (which plugs into the FTDX-5000 TX REQ jack) is required
for the
F SET and TUNE functions, which both operate by keying the exciter. If
the
Quadra is not tracking the band selection on the FTDX-5000, there may
be a
common/ground return issue.
That's what I've been thinking also and have spent the last two hours
making ground cables. I only have one working hand so its slowed me
down a little<:-))

I use my Quadra with two Icom exciters. Band Data 2 is connected to ACC2
Pins 2/3. Band Data 1 is not used. PTT and ALC are connected via a stereo
RCA-ended cable.

Hi Roger,
Do you have the Band Data 1, Band Data 2 (Control) and ALC cables
connected
I'm not using the band data 2 for the auto tune, but otherwise as far
as I
can see it should work.
which is listed as not needed except for that function.
I do need to check the grounding, but the auto band switching should work
just by changing bands.
I had a Tokyo Hy Power 1.5 KFX and the band switching was flawless.

per page 13 of the FTDX-5000 user manual? Band tracking, F SET and
TUNE should all work if all the required interconnecting cables are in
place.

Subject: [Yaesu] Quadra
I picked up a quadra and an FT1000 MK-V. I wanted the Quadra to go
with my 5000MP and the 1000 as a back up.
So far I think I have the proper cable in the proper places and menu
172 enabled on the 5000MP.
When I turn on the 5000MP the Quadra powers up and goes through the
self check and gives me Protection ON, Voltage NORMAL, Bias Check,
Temp Normal, Maintenance Mode ON, Slave ON.
My problem is I can't get the Quadra to change bands. It stays on 50
MHz. I can set it to manual, press F-Set and key the exciter (with
low
power) It goes through its cycle, but the band still doesn't change.
Any thoughts?
I'm a complete novice where the Quadra is concerned and am sticking
strictly to the procedures in the manual.
