There has been much babble recently about the bad points of roller
inductors. I had a Collins KWM-1 that had terrible roller inductors for
tuning. They were always intermittent and touchy to tune. Of course that
design was 40 years ago.

I just spent the last few hours cleaning a half inch of moss from the coil
just to be able to take the pictures! I had to shoot the pictures quick,
before the moss grew back! (hihi)
