The YC229 is NOT a straight drop in replacement for the 3-500Z.
1) As mention the filament is NOT 5.0 Volts rather 6.3 Volts
2) Though the pin configuration will fit the SK410 socket The socket
connections are not sufficient. The primary connection for the grid is the
Grid Ring which must be bolted to the chassis.
This tube is a follow on of the 3CX1200 series. The first 2 versions (A7 &
D7) had high feedback capacitance making them excellent oscillators. The Z7
variant was the first to employ the new geometry and Grid Ring. It's
commercial designation was YU-181. When Eimac turned out the lights on
Varian and shifted production back to San Carlos it reengineered the Anode
Cooler raising the Plate Dissapation Rating to 1600 watts and redesignating
the tube 3CX1600/YC229. Arnold Howell has exclusive distribution rights.
The principle application for this tube is in MRI equipment. I have seen
only one published homebrew design and have not seen any commercial Ham
Radio amp that employs this tube. NOT EVEN A HENRY If Eimac has the
feedback problem licked this tube with its Higher Anode voltage rating and
increased dissapation could be a sleeper.
