Certainly, auto ignition coils will work - but it requires a bit of thought.
First, the coil is designed for continuous duty with pulses of short
duration. Within that limitation, you can build a high frequency supply and
vary the output to operate the ignition coil. Although the output of the
ignition coil need not be linear, it should be variable and measurable.
Make sure the output frequency of the ignition coil is within the
measurement ability of the voltmeter. Build a voltmeter within the device
using a surplus meter.
The advantage of your approach is that it can be used as a backup to run the
lawnmower.
