The triple checking my work answered the question of what happened to the
caps. In a display of dumbassedness, while jumpering some circuit boards I
was using, I did it in a way that left only two caps in one leg of the
doubler. Apparently they could withstand half of the 1700v on cw with their
450 volts rating, but not half the the 2600v in the ssb setting. Makes sense.
Interestingly the one cap that is in the terrible physical shape still shows
capacitance using the ohmeter. The one next to it shows just a little crease
in the top, but measures a dead short.
