There has been at least one attempt at an experiment, although history
failed to record the results.
An OT told me that when the British were retreating from Singapore
during WW2, he was ordered to smash the transmitters. But before he did,
he rounded up all the spare paper filter caps, carefully charged them to
full HV, and left them lying casually on the workbench...
