A lot of soldering irons will come onto the amateur market. My very small firm gave away around 30 high spec irons to whoever wanted them, plus solder: I caught 2, one for me and on for my club, so my spare went to a friend. One of my colleagues also collected our entire stock of surface mount parts just for the asking.
