[Amps] motor run cap

Hi builders, 


I picked up a nice ~60 cfm ebm blower at our local hamfest.   This thing needs 
a motor run cap, 4mfd.   What does a motor run cap do, and is a cap, a cap, is 
a cap?   Can I just pull a 4mfd cap rated at 250 or 400V from my junk box?
