Just wondering... What exactly does TGV do? I presume the TG are Trey's
intials. What about the V? (Hope it's not CW shorthand for 4, hi)

Message-ID: <52950303031925/0006485696PK1EM@MCIMAIL.COM>
Two observations from my effort as VP5PP in the ARRL CW DX ...
YES, diddy dum dum diddy in the middle of an exchange is a LARGE
pain in the rump and a demonstration of rudeness and impatience to
which I won't respond. What does the butt-in'er expect ... am I to
stop the present exchange, tell the current QSO to QRX while I work
the intruder and resume the exchange with the "first" station?
I notice NO ONE ever ID's when behaving this way.
A more signifigant proplem (for me) resulted from how some VOX circuits
behave on CW. W's become M's, K's become A's, N's become E's, etc.
Heard the likes of A0EU (K0EU), E2IC (N2IC) and M8RLY (W8RLY) and many
"RQ CQ de W#XYZ's".
VOX's set for fast drop-out (between parts of the exchange) turned
599's into H99's (or HNN's) and R's into N's, making me think I had
something incorrect and the sender was saying "N" for "no". You might
be surprised if you listened to your rig's transmitted signal (not the
audio sidetone) as you send a typical fast exchange.
A space as the first character in each of CT's F-key messages will
compensate for sluggish VOX circuits/relays, and a foot-switch is
handy when you have to grab the paddles for that "not stored in CT"
exchange.
And yes, to echo others, the op at KY3H was indeed a $%&*#! ...
bet he sends ?'s, too.

Some of the serious antenna-building locals may have found a cheaper
source but for a reasonable price (much less than retail) and a WIDE
variety of aluminu try the Dillsburg Aeroplane Works in Dillsburg, PA - a
few miles south of Harrisburg just off Rt 15. They specialize in
supplying builders of homebrew airplanes and exotic racecars. They have
lots of interesting aluminum -- all sizes shapes and types. I'm sure
someone else will chime in and give you their exact address and fone nr.
They also sell aluminum plate and heavy duty steel masts of all kinds of
allys. Don't remember about copper or brass tube/plate but I think they
have that too.
Good luck

Subject: Not Signing Calls on Every Contact
Message-ID: <2F5798B6@msmail.dsto.gov.au>
There are two views of a DX station not signing his call between every
contact.
1) Small stations, who have been calling for a while, like it because it
decreases the time that they will need to expend to make a contact.
2) Some people with big stations, who usually get through on one call, do
not like it because it increases the time that they will need to expend to
make a contact.
DX STATION VIEWPOINT COMMENTS
When I am operating as a DX station, I generally do what I think will
maximize my score. This often involves not signing my call every time. There
is no set formula such as signing every three contacts. There is an
independent decision made every time. A number of things influence these
decisions.
To start with, there are many cases where I copy more than one call after a
CQ. I almost never sign my call in between working them, and can see no
advantage to signing my call in between working them. There are people who
state with religious conviction that one should always sign his call after
every contact. I believe this example counters such a hard rule.
It is my desire to make people think they should stay around and continue to
call. I often almost have the calls of several stations, and try to make
them think things are happening fast, and it is just a moment before they
will be in the log. I do this by not signing my call, in hopes that new,
stronger stations will be kept off balance, and the guys that have been
calling will stay.
At the start of a contest or at the start of a band opening there is almost
no problem doing this. People will call you and almost none will be
duplicates. Sometimes one will say "CL? " during his exchange, and I always
include my call when I return.
As the end of the contest gets nearer, I tend to sign more often. Often this
will essentially be every time, because I sense there are too many out there
who have worked me on that band. Usually this does not hurt my rate because
new stations are harder to find at that time.
I also like it when people tailend, properly that is. I always imagine that
any really good op can work me in a QSO or two, just by tailending, no
matter how weak he is.
SOME CALLING STATION THOUGHTS
I operate many contests using small stations as well as large, and call
many stations. I often like it when stations do not sign their calls every
time, particularly when I do not get them immediately. If I detect what I
think to be a situation where the other operator always works the loudest
station, I assess how for down I think I am, and react accordingly.
I have been operating in contests a long time and enjoy trying to identify
stations who are not signing their calls. There are many things that can be
used to do this. The report sent identifies the location in many contests.
The powers sent in ARRL DX Contests help identify stations. Accents on
phone, and tones on CW often help. Actual frequencies used help also. K1EA's
and N6TR's logging programs have band mapping that now automates what I did
manually for many years.
There are also clues in their exchanges that can tell you if you haven't
worked someone, even if you don't know his call. If someone is signing a
zone that I haven't worked, I'll call him and go CL? after sending my
exchange.
If someone goes 3 or 4 QSOs without signing, and I haven't figured out who
he is or whether I have definitely not worked him, I may call anyway. If he
ends up being a dupe, he can tell me so and we won't work. Guys do it to me
when I don't sign my call, and I believe it's just part of the cost of doing
business.
By the way, the North American Sprint is a contest that if you haven't
learned to tell who many stations are, before hearing their calls, you won't
place in the top few. This is one of the things about the Sprint that makes
it fun.

COMMENTS:
Pleasant surprise! 15m was unexpectedly good. The band was open as
early as 2100z.
160m was also good (on the first day in particular). We've been
getting crazy and crazy about this band since the first installation
of beverage. This time, we worked IL, IN, and MI for the first
time. The improved sensitivity is attributed to the lowered height of
the beverage. The previous beverage was more than 30 feet above ground
to avoid mushroom yard and therefore a bit noisy. We carefully made
our way into the forest, never to damage expensive mushrooms, and
wired the new beverage at 10 feet above ground. The new one was silent
and excellent.
CU ALL in the phone this weekend! (Sorry, no 160m phone allowed in JA)

1995 CONWAY REEF DXPEDITION
With the addition of a fifth operator, the DXpedition team
is complete, and consists of the following members.
Mats, SM7PKK Garry, NI6T
Nils, SM6CAS Jun, JH4RHF
Pekka, OH1RY
This is an international team, with an emphasis on Europe.
We will make the best possible effort to move Conway Reef
down the "most-wanted" list around the world. The three
stations will be manned around the clock, requiring more
than 14 hours operating time per operator per day for 10
days.
Landing permission has been secured and needed radio
licenses obtained.
The DXpedition will be QRV from Conway Reef from 24 March to
April 3, including the CQ WPX SSB Contest. Preferred frequencies were
previously published.
Our callsigns are: 3D2CU CW/RTTY
3D2CT SSB
SM7PKK and SM6CAS depart Sweden March 11 and arrive in Fiji
on the 13th, to be joined by the remaining operators over
the next several days.
The cost of this DXpedition has increased, reflecting our
decision to better serve the DX Deserving by obtaining
larger power generators and more equipment. Our estimated
costs are $17,000, exclusive of personal travel to and
accommodations in Fiji.
Due to our increased costs, we need more financial help from
the DX community. Our time to departure is short and a
timely response would be appreciated!

Hi,
it looks like I'll be editing a local amateur radio newsletter for the
next year. Does anyone know of a E-mail group or Internet home page
for this subject? I'm looking for on-line material for the newsletter,
such as operating events, technical stuff, propagation info, graphics
(such as comics/cartoons), etc.
Please respond directly to me at:

Thanks and 73 de TF3KX

Missing from the list was the SO score of Lew, N2LT, which is around 2.9 M

Subject: Not Signing Calls on Every Contact
Message-ID: <Pine.SUN.3.91.950303092510.14937C-100000@latte.eng.umd.edu>
Having operated overseas in many contests I believe in signing my call
after every contact unless:
1) Someone tailends me successfully
2) I picked up more than one call the last time
Unfortunately I do not respond as readily to tail-ends as I used to
because, when doing so, the pile-up gets completely out of control
nowadays as most of the newer operators, particularly in Europe, do not
know what tail-ending is and confuse it with the practice of calling
throughout one's contact with another station.
