Has anyone noticed how cheap and disgusting qst has become. First it was
a move to cheaper paper (close to tissue paper). Next, came six pages
of ads up front in qst (now it is 8 or 12 pages). Then to really make it
ratty, they plaster all sort of crap on the cover simimlar to supermarket
tabloids. Finally, to really jam it up the members ass, they eliminate
the plastic wrapper and stick the label right to the front of the magazine.
Sometime change is good, but NOT in this case!!! It sucks. QST nolonger
looks like a professional Journal. It now looks like an amateur journal
(tabloid is a better word)

Yeah, and then they have the nerve to charge about 1 cent for each page!
Well, OK, I use the ARRL bureau and many of their other services, so it
might cost me about one-fifth of a cent per page, but still, you'd think
they would hand deliver them to each of their members for that price.
That way they wouldn't get fingerprints on them from the postal workers
and stuff. I bet lots of people breathe on those mags before we get them -
blecchhh! And they have a lot of stuff in them about contests, who needs
this rag? I bet there's a spelling mistake somewhere in mine, too!

Yes, the ARRL spends quite a bit of money on 1-800-32-NEW HAM for
prospective amateurs. However, the cost tends to be offset by the
publications these people buy....

QST may be becoming a rag, but in the meantime it still offers a few items
of real interest to hams. Like product reviews that actually have
measurements. Not like CQ, where every review is made to look real
technical by reprinting the owner's manual, and the bottom line reads
something like " while no measurements were made, the radio sounded
real good on the air".
Whats the matter with a little color and pizzazz? We wouldn't
be able to attract much new blood to the hobby if QST always looked
like NCJ! If you like journals, read NCJ and QEX. If you want
a nice attractive magazine, read QST. At least the pictures look
nice in color.
Rather than bashing QST on non-issues like the bag, why don't
you ask them something interesting, like why didn't they
print AG6K's rebuttal?

Yes, and to rub in the insult of promotions printed all over the
front cover there are no page references on the cover, thus
forcing the reader to search through the pages of advertising for the
table of contents. Once at the table of contents the title under
which the item of interest is listed differs sufficiently from that
used on the cover. Often one has to scan the entire table of
contests and guess as to which article to look up. What a pain.
Isn't it great having your QST dog-eared upon arrival. Gives it that
doctor's office appearance. My April issue had the first six pages
ripped. Yes, "ARRL, are you listening???"

How long you wait depends on who is responsible for
sending out contest certificates. Some volunteers
are fantastic--you couldn't get better service if you
paid them. Others, well...
I just got my Fall 1994 QRP ARCI certificate--along
with 5 others dating back to Spring 1992....
Unfortunately, the old contest manager lost interest,
and the new guy had to spend a lot of time catching
up....400 certificates worth!
BTW, I store my 8.5 inch by 11 inch certificates in mylar
pockets--they don't have plasticizers that stick to the
printing used on most certificates.
