I know the rules say 20 and 40M. I trust there's no "hidden"
requirement to actually make QSOs on both bands! With nice, loud,
QRN-free signals from near and far on 20 I just could see no
reason to go to 40 and listen to all the static.

When the Q signal list was made the guys tried to think of all sorts of Q
signals to cover all sorts of things. Many, or most, are rarely used,
some virtually never. QRL was one of the rare or never ones until about
1975 -- not sure, sometime between '75 and '85 I guess.

Okay, I fooled you. While getting warmed up for the internet sprint, I
was listening to a tape of a previous sprint in the car while picking up
Chinese take out before the contest (a great trade for two hours in front
of the radio).
Well, I was working some weak station and some N6** station goes:
"NA N6**" and someone answered him before I could even send . _ . . .
The QSO progressed along even with me trying to get their attention
(they were both pretty strong and the guy I was working was really
weak). In the end, they finished their QSO without a problem (I was
not in their ideal skip zone) and my QSO was blown away and I lost
a lot of time.
The moral of this story is that if you are going to use a CQ to see if
the frequency is in use, you might be real sensitive to what happens next.
If you want to work the guy that comes back to you regardless of whoever
else is making a QSO on that frequency, you might create some hard feelings.
I sure got mad!!

I put up a better antenna for 20m, but still couldn't CQ. Kitchen

I'm forwarding the above fomr someone named Mike who doesn't seem to have
a callsign, though I guess it's not illegal to not have one on the reflector.
In case anyone else is asking this same question, the answer is, I
don't. All my messages on this topic have been today, July 22. I have
not signed on for several days so I got a late start on the QRL
discussion and had some catching up to do.
I think by this point (all today) I have pretty much had my say and don't
feel any great urge to add to it, unless some replies deserve answers.

Someone named Mike who didn't have a callsign anywhere in his message
asked why I feel compelled to comment on the QRL question every day.
My answer is that I don't. All my comments have been today (and I
realize it's after midnight here now, so technically I'm into day two of
my comment period, hi). I hadn't checked in to read the e-mail for
several days and missed the first few days of this discussion and was
getting caught up.
I think I've had my say and don't feel any great urge to keep commenting
further unless someone gets me to rise to the bait with their replies. hi.
