Sorry. I should have made this clearer in my original posting.
Over a dozen folks have asked the same question. A "ground lifter"
is simply a 3-to-2 prong adaptor for standard 120V AC US wall jacks.
Essentially, it breaks the earth ground connection, which in this
case seems to have eliminated a ground loop. Further investigation
as to the cause of the ground loop continues.
