Measure the resistance of the coil, and, knowing the voltage, you can then
calculate the current.
An easy thing to do is:
place a field collapse spike diode across the coil, and mounting the coil
on a rubber grommet to quiet it's "clunk" down a bit.
Also,
if you are really concerned about the switching values of current and
voltage that is being switched by your transceiver, I have a schematic that
is simple to make up on a small perf board, and will drop the switched
values down to just a few volts and very few milliamps.
