Why? Computers. Remember the old bed-sheet sized check sheets for SS? Many more casual participants who have bigger antennas than in the 'old days' Rigs that can 'hear' better. Bigger antennas on the 'top-shelf' stations. Packet.....Yuch!` More propogation aids available and a better understading of propogation. More sophisticated set ups....SO2R, DVK, auto band switching.
