I disagree with Scott, W4PAs suggestion about ditching the top 10 boxes and I
don't know where the thread started suggesting that the only way they exist is
in the write-up. Scott, if you look up on your wall to the left and see all of
those certs and plaques that you have deservedly earned, you will no doubt
notice that it doesn't just say the winner in the ARRL section but also what
place you were in the top 10.
Making a bigger deal of regional winners is a great idea, and I applaud it. By
call area makes a lot of sense, but others are worthy too. Dumbing down the
accomplishment of an overall winner or 2nd, 3rd place etc., I don't agree with.
Coming from someone who has travelled to K5ZD, NT1Y, etc. to "even the playing
field" with an airline ticket is quite surprising. You, of all people, should
value the effort that you have gone to, to "earn the win". I applaud you for
doing so. Encourage others, so inclined, to do the same. I have as well,
without your impressive results.
If people out west are discouraged by the ARRL DX and CQ WW slant to the east
coast they have many options:
- concentrate on NAQP, SS, ARRL 160/10, WPX
- guest op from some of the many fine stations that go un-used every year, if
the owner is willing
- go on a DXpedition
- move
- just have fun and go for the regional win (just like us East Coasters do for
NAQP or SS)
Not sure how any of this has anything to do with having the strong arm of the
law give a VY1 an advantage over a W1. That's just plain nit far, IMHO.
