Hi,
Besides straight-forward CW copying difficulties, wishful thinking can
also be involved. I get a lot of people transmogrifying my call, AB1J, into
A61J. Happens all the time, twice out of 3 QSOs last night on 40 with weak
signals and QRN. I don't send a "6" and in contests the computer is
sending a "B" perfectly. It's just that if someone can't figure it out,
they'd
rather work A61J than AB1J. I am in the SCP file with AB1J, if anyone wants
to try it both ways when they enter my call.
Sometimes I slow down the "B" slightly in the N1MM macro ( A>B<1J ), one
notch, just to give a little assistance. That does seem to help.
Interestingly, this was never a problem from the time I got my call in 1978
until the late 1990s when A6 stations became quite active. The first
prominent one was A61AJ and following that I got a lot of A61AJ replies. Now
it's just settled down to A61J.
A61J is an assigned call and maybe he gets a lot of unexplained QSLs. He
is not in the MASTER.DTA SCP file.
73,
Kermit, AB1J

Your comment on issues copying some letters i.e. S and H, D and B, etc is
interesting. I have always had a knack when it came CW but when busy and
tired and the CW speed is pushing my upper bounds I too have occasional
difficulty with (S and H), (B and 6) but not (H and 5), or (D and B);
everybody's hearing is a bit different.
