I've been reading some interesting comments re the new section.

Please note this Sept, the correct abbreviation will be clarrified, YT
--it will be corrected in TCA Mag..I have no idea how YUK was ever printed
but things happen.

That aside, and has been explained already, YT is the abbreviation used in
the vast majority of contests and QSO parties already. Where section
abbreviations are concerned, it remains the contest sponsor who decides.

Speaking as a Yukon Amateur, I think the simplest thing for contest
organizers to do (if they feel it is too outrageous to have sections with
fewer contesters ruining their contests, sweeps etc) is to let the computer
do the tabulating. A couple lines of code whereby working any of the
Northern Territories would count as a sweep---whether you work NT, NU or
YT. Same might be said for other areas. There are plenty of ways to resolve
this issue if it's a huge problem. If the rules remain as they are, exoect
to hear YT. Actually, expect to hear YT regardless...

There are over 45 + active amateurs in Yukon--and growing. BTW, Yukon has
the highest per capital of Hams in the country. The creation of the
section has nothing to do with contests but rather the evolution of Amateur
radio in Yukon and our integration with emergency agencies. That is why
sections are created...emergency management. Back in the day when traffic
handling and other similar activities were actually relevant, ARRL had some
contests like sweeps to test traffic handling abilities between SECTIONS to
test skil and accuracy. Its the reason for the long exchange as well. For
our part in Yukon, it is driven also by our desire to keep the same
abbreviation (YT) for various activities. From a purely HF perspective, we
have far fewer folks interested in contests. Maybe half a dozen.

I am hoping this clears up some of the conspiracy theories. Trust me, by
any name or abbreviation, we work as many stations as we want with crazy
pileups--until the Northern lights show up and ruin everything. Whether NT,
TER, whatever, it offers no advantage. We are now consistently sending the
same abbreviation for every contest.

cheers,

Scott VY1CO
