The ultrasonic detector I saw the local power company use was quite
small. It seemed to be designed to be used close to the offending
source so as to pinpoint the problem. It was mounted on a long
insulating pole for personnel protection. BTW it worked very well.
The lineman ran it around the top of the pole and it sounded off
loud and clear on one of the insulators. Upon replacement, the
noise was gone. The problem seemed to be some kind of corona
discharge which was not visible to the naked eye.
