What we build and commercial are different.
We can build or modify amps with 20 db or more gain and virtually any power capability. We are just expected to operate them legally.
Receivers and transmitters are just "do your best"
They are also expected to have the required harmonic suppression and clean signals.(Don't remember the numbers, but for harmonic suppression "I think" it's >=50db for HF and 60 db for VHF and up. The only things requiring FCC approval are amps and scanning receivers. That makes me wonder about the duobanders that scan either programed frequencies, or full band scan.

That's nothing...have you checked out Amazon.com recently?

There is nothing that says you must be a licensed Amateur Radio operator to
purchase a ham band capable transmitting device.

Another one that always make me chuckle, is the 'importance' people seem to
put on whether or not a ham radio capable of transmitting, is FCC
certified. No radio, capable of transmitting in the amateur radio allocated
bands needs to be certified. If they did, all those little sardine can ¼
watt CW transmitters I built as a kid were illegal! J

Ken, et al,

See the following link for ham radios sold at Walmart. Do you really
believe there is any license validation taking place for these purchases?
