IOW, you were borrowing the neutral of a neighbor - someone else who was on the 
same pole transformer.   
How did you find the missing neutral problem?

From 1981 to around 2005 or so, the neutral for the 220 VAC service for my 
home was the water inside a 110' run of 1.25" PVC pipe back to the well 
casing.
