I bought a Trane system in 2010. I insisted on no variable speed motors. What I
got from Trane was a unit with an electronically commutated motor (ECM) that
generated lots of RFI. I was able to eliminate most of it with ferrites. I
posted about the issue in more detail here (rfi reflector) in 2010.
I no longer live in that house so I don’t know what the particulars of the
system was. My point is that specifying no variable speed motors is not
sufficient to guarantee no RFI.
