Your series diode with no DC return, e.g. a wire probe antenna probably
won't work. It would be far better to connect the diode between - and
plus terminals, then hook on the probe antenna. A shunt rectifier has
been the classical RF probe since the HP 410 VTVM and the Heathkit
VTVMs.
