Reducing the power has nothing to do with distortion or broadness of the
signal (Those result from audio over driving the mike input circuit). It
is because PSK is a 100 per cent duty cycle mode like RTTY, and you could
burn up the final that is rated for CW and SSB Intermittent Service. It is
a heat dissipation issue.
