OK, Carl. My first impression from reading the manual was that the "Ext
T/R delay" was as you say, but I thought maybe I had missed something.
This is my first TT transceiver so I wasn't aware of their keying
scheme. The QSK delay is then the only option to prevent hearing
receiver noise between code elements or words at slow speeds. I hope
they extend the range of that function in future firmware revisions.

Thanks for your help.

The EXT T/R delay has nothing to do with the Orion's T/R switching. It is
just for external use.
The Orion's antenna relay must switch on every dit and dah by design. Every
tentec rig I have ever seen works this way since the Tritons. It is a
proven design and works very well.

Carl, thanks for your reply and the enlightenment. I now understand
what you were actually referring to. Your description of the QSK delay
makes sense because I can hear the Orion's T/R relay clicking in synch
with my keying irrespective of the delay setting. So they're only
controlling the time that the audio's off while the T/R relay follows
the keying.
I understand the function of the "Ext T/R delay" for the amplifier, but
would it also control the delay of the relays in the Orion? That might
solve the limitations on the delay at slower CW speeds that I was
referring to and also minimize wear and tear on the Orion's T/R relay?
I'll check it.

No, the QSK delay has nothing to do with this. All the QSK delay does it
change the time the receiver audio comes back on after transmitting. The
amp relay delay time is controlled by "Ext T/R delay". This is set from

  0

percent to 100 percent with 100 percent equaling one second. This

  control

sets the extra time the amp key line stays on after the key line goes

  off.

It is used to keep the amp antenna relay from coming up and down for each

  CW

element.

The keying problem That I was refering to in the earlier post can only be
comtrolled insode the Orion firmware. It relates to how long the
transmitter actually transmits compared to how the CW key line is on.

  The

transmitter keys 20 milliseconds (that 20/1000 seconds) after the CW key
line comes on. In order to make up for this loss of 20 milliseconds, the
transmitter should continue to stay on for 20 milliseconds after the key
line goes off but it doesn't. It only stays on for another 12

  milliseconds

making all CW elements short by about 8 milliseconds. I see this as a
firmware bug that should be corrected.

Carl and others, I am a new Orion owner and I have been trying to extend
the relay delay (or on time) by increasing the "QSK delay" setting. I
am practically at a 100% and still the delay is quite short, especially
for speeds below 20 WPM. When you refer to holding "the keying output
for about 12 seconds", are you talking about this setting? I presume
that this setting is the only way to control the CW delay for non-QSK
operation? If so, it is a serious limitation.

Yes, they are all shortened. In the tentec keying scheme, all dits and

  dahs

are the first one. The Orion needs to keep the keying held down for

  about 8

milliseconds longer when the key line is released. The current scheme

  keys

the radio about 20 milliseconds after the key line is grounded but only
holds the keying output for about 12 milliseconds after the key line is
released. This should be able to be corrected in a future firmware

  release.

And yes, there is some clipping on the first couple of dot on the

Been reading about this topic for awhile. I also saw the keying

  picture

in QST with the first dot shortened.

However, I'm confused. With QSK, isn't *every* dot the first dot?

  (thus

if one was shortened, you would think they would all be shortened).
