I remember the complex procedure when I was a novice and used an old NC-100
receiver.
1. Turn tuning until you hear hams.
2. Call CQ there.

It's not at all difficult to a generation brought up on digital displays I
can see how an analog dial could be disturbingly foreign. Just like an
analog wristwatch or clock to someone used to digital clocks!
Turn the BAND switch to 7.0...you are on 40 meters, if the pointer is all
the way to the left, your rig is close to 7.000000 MHz the far end of the
dial is 7.500000 MHz. The dial scale with the red pointer is broken up
into
100 KHz segments, marked as 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.
Pop on the "CAL" or Calibrator knob, you may or may not hear beeping.
CAREFULLY, tune the main tuning knob until you "zero beat" or "null" the
beeping noise. With any luck, you are now exactly on 7.000 MHz -- even
if
the silver ring around the tuning knob doesn't point to "0"
Now, keep the beeping noise "nulled" hold the black center tuning knob
firmly, and gently rotate the silver frequency ring until it DOES align
with
" 0 " at the top.
Shut off the calibrator.
From this point, it's incredibly easy. Each mark on the silver ring is 1
KHz. There are larger marks every five KHz, and a number every 10 KHz.
Rotate the main tuning knob until the number 10 is at the top. You are
now
tuned to 7.010 MHz
Continue until the number 20 is at the top. Now you are on 7.020 MHz
Pull the Calibrator control out again and as you slowly tune up five marks
on the dial, halfway between 20 and 30, you SHOULD find another frequency
null. There is one every 25 KHz! Turn off the calibrator. Notice that
the
red dial pointer is about a quarter of the way between 0 and 1 on the
scale?
Good. If it's not, there is a little wheel on the underside of the rig,
directly under the scale that allows you to gently move that pointer a
little to line it up accurately.
Continue up the band until the frequency ring is once again pointing to "
0
" You are tuned close to 7.100 MHz. Notice the red pointer should be at
the ' 1 ' mark. Also, if you pull the calibrator, you can once again find
the null and fine-adjust the silver ring to point exactly to the 0.
