Yes, when operating PSK/RTTY with the audio cable hook-up, you use the VOX to 
control T/R switching.  That means that you have to adjust the levels to make 
it happen, but it does work.  Some guidance on this may be found in the O2 
instruction book, but trial-and-error is the best way of doing it since 
everyone's computer settings will be different.  Also, be sure AUX input is 
enabled, 
and the MIC input disabled, when using VOX on digital modes.
This works for me on the Argo V as well as the O2.
As to why some users prefer interface boxes, you'll have to ask them.
