Yes and no. When we write equations and draw equivalent circuits, we can 
certainly pick any point we wish as a reference. BUT -- mother nature 
does care about our equations, or how we talk about or try to understand 
the laws of physics. We can CALL earth a reference point, and it might 
be OUR reference point, but it may not be mother nature's reference 
point.  )
