John:
In the Sept issue of "73 Am.Radio Today"
on p 26 W1GV has an article on a 1/2 wave
balloon supported vertical wire for 160.
He uses a "Zepp Feed" to match the
1/2 wave wire to 50 ohms:

He runs about 30 feet of open wire transmission
wire from his transmatch to the vertical. One
leads connects to the vertical - the other to
ground. W1GV says "This may seem strange-
(using the Zepp-open wire feed) that by intro-
ducing reactance into the feed-point impedance
a match could be made easier to get than with
zero reactance...but it worked. With the Zepp
feed the bandwidth is very narrow and the
tuning of the transmatch extremely sharp."
He used a vertical wire of 259 feet. I have not
used this feed arrangement myself.
