The first place I recall seeing it was in the famous West Coast DX
Bulletin.  The WCDXB, in addition to providing great DX info, was peopled
with several fictitous characters all of whom were most amusing.  Readers
will recall with amusement the QRPer, the Enlightened Ones, and others,
along with the phrase which explained everything: "DX is!!!"

There may have been earlier appearances of Slim, but it does have the ring
of Mr. Cassaday's creations.
