I would hope this echo incident doesn't turn into a =
"elevated Vs. ground" mounted radials thing. I am not a physicist,
or the like, nor do I claim to be. I have heard echoes on 160 many time =
before - as well as some of you reading this. I don't claim that this =
was a LP condition - but I do wonder if the signal followed the =
terminator to the west of me and then up along S.America to the east =
coast. The reason I wonder this is that it is not uncommon at all for us =
in Alaska to work either through or along the auroral zone to the east =
coast. This condition is why we don't hear/work W1's very often, as well =
as 2's and 3's to some extent - s I don't see any thing out of the =
ordinary with the auoral oval at the time we had echoes. There have been =
times on 160 when I could say my call on ssb and upon unkeying hear my =
ENTIRE call come back to me - uncanny. And there have been times that =
signals sounded "full" from a slight echo - however this echo was much =
different. I have never heard anything this severe on 160 - this was =
worse than when 40 does that. These echoes were so bad that I had real =
trouble getting W8JI's call - yet he was 589 on peaks and my noise floor =
was literally S-0.
It is also very strange that K1ZM had to point s/se to work me - I did =
try a low angle vert. and also a the inv.. vee which is also low (96') =
The signals were all louder on the VEE - but that is usually the case =
from here to the East Coast.

So in summation, I don't see anything unusual in the aurora between here =
and east coast that night - but tell that to my ears!
I will try to get up and do =
more east coast sunrise this week starting about 10:30z , so maybe it =
will occur again and we will have more data to sift over . =20
