It is ALL due to that great soil Bill!
Have you run EZNEC to determine if the TOA was different between the two?
There is also a 3-4dB decrease off the loop ends.
With skew paths and who knows what else thrown into the soup; I asked
Earl about the interlaced quads.  They may prove to be an adequate
compromise...particularly on 80/40M for those without the room for tall
towers and elaborate ground systems.

Do you have any dimensions or soil data? Wasnt the GD one on some very
tall tower at the ocean?
