Of course, you can have the best of both worlds: a shortened hairpin
monople WITH a top-hat.

BTW, my own antenna is a folded fan, with 9 wire conductors composing
the element and a vacuum variable series cap at the feedpoint. All
connections are soldered. It's 8 feet wide across the top. Not too much
room for resistance losses in the element.
