I have had excellent success with 17 ga galvanized electric fence 
wire for Beverages.  The losses when used for a Beverage, being a low 
current antenna, are insignificant compared w/copper.  A half mile 
costs about $15 at Agway (probably less than the cost of shipping 
that spool of telephone wire).  I would NOT use it for radials due to 
corrosion in the ground.
