This shows why it isn't that critical.......

All spacings below are inside spacing, not center spacing.

For #17:

1" spacing is 460 ohms with bare wire.

2" spacing is only 540 ohms, which would still be very
acceptable mismatch (only 1.2 : 1 VSWR).

3" spacing is 588 ohms. 1.3 : 1 mismatch.

If you used number 14, a common wire:

1.5" =470 ohm

2" = 500 ohm. 1.1 : 1 SWR

3" = 547 ohm.  1.2 : 1  mismatch

I can use 3" spaced number 14 and only have a a 1.2:1
mismatch.
