I agree with doing something for receive before major additions to transmit...
Look at a  short, untuned dipole along the periphery of the yard, about head 
high - doesn't have to be a straight line...  This is a quicky that you can 
cobble up in a half hour to try...  A usefull addition to that dipole would be 
a tuner on the end of the receive coax for peaking the SN ratio...

Now having said all this, one thing you can do with your simple transmit 
vertical to improve efficiency is to add a capacity hat...  Look for articles 
by Jerry Sevick, W2FMI, on short vertical antennas, he wrote the book on this...
