Bob,

Google beverage antenna and you will come up with a wealth of info. 
Short is OK but you still have to match its impedance and, if I read 
your post correctly, there are a few steps you will need to take to get 
it bi directional. See ON4UN's Low Band DXing, Vic Misek's Beverage 
Handbook and read W8JI's web site. There are many other references to check.
