Bob,

It all depends on how good your ground system is. If it is 
perfect (not really possible unless you are over salt 
water) the difference between a high Q coil and top 
loading (assymetrical or not) will be small (.2 - .4 dB). 
If your ground system is average (10 - 15 ohms), the 
difference can be big -- several dB-s! So if you can add 
top loading, do it. Don't worry about it being 
assymetrical: the high angle radiation will be a small 
percentage of the overall energy radiated (better then 
burning it in the ground, anyway).
